ADDING THE FINISHING TOUCHES TO OUR BATHROOM

When all the renovating is complete, it’s time for styling the space with all the décor + accessories! This is one of my favourite parts to any project because it is when the overall vision becomes reality. In this post I am going to tell you all about the finishing touches that completed our bathroom transformation and made it photo ready ♡.

I’m so happy with the result! Here’s a few photos from the gallery.

where to start?

The RUG was the first accessory added to the bathroom. If you were around on my Instagram during this transformation, you’ll know that I debated on a few different carpets and even had some polls. The one I ended up purchasing was 2nd runner up! I purchased it before we even finished the vanity. When it arrived, I put it in the bathroom right away and then had to keep moving it out because we were still working on things lol. I love the neutral + green tones and the contrast it provides against the flooring.

I had already picked out my VANITY LIGHT + MIRROR, so I decided to start by installing those 2 items. For the light fixture, I chose something with a gold finish to bring warmth to the space and opted for a glass shade for an open feel! I also went with a gold finish on the mirror, but the rounded corners are what sold me. I love how it softens things up.

PS. You can find all of the things I purchased for our bathroom on the Shop My Home page under the Shop tab on the top menu. I have also linked it at the bottom of this post.

I wanted to add warmth against the bright white walls and so when selecting my TOILET PAPER HOLDER + TOWEL BAR, I went with a gold finish as well. Oh, and I also got some cute robe hooks! All from Amazon! If you haven’t already notice lol, gold finishes were a common selection in my styling.

My next purchase was the SHOWER CURTAIN + SHOWER RINGS. The shower curtain was definitely a splurge item in this transformation at a price of $90…but I tried to find something I loved at a lower price and didn’t have much luck. I love the ivory colour + the tone-on-tone tufting at the top, I’ll never getting tired of looking at it (lol, well…at least I don’t think I will – If you know me, you know I love to change my mind and I’m constantly switching things up). For the curtain rod, I just purchased a simple white retractable one from Amazon, nothing fancy. I just wanted it to blend in and it does a perfect job of that! I, of course, also wanted curtain rings with a gold finish. I purchased something simple + inexpensive from Amazon.

Let’s talk about the vanity. I really didn’t have to do much styling because it is quite small and there isn’t really any counter space. All I keep on the top is a glass soap jar I bought at HomeSense, but I removed it for the photos. The only “styling” required was the 2 baskets I had planned for on the bottom shelf of the vanity. Nelson and I each have our own basket to store our extra products that don’t fit in the cabinet!

Next on the list was what to do over the toilet because it definitely needed some spicing up! I figured this was a perfect opportunity to do something that would create a little bit of extra storage, so I decided on doing 2 WOOD SHELVES. I used the left-over wood from the vanity and made two ¾” thick shelves and stained them to match the vanity! To install them, I went with a bracket that had a front lip. I really wanted gold to stay on theme, but couldn’t find anything I liked at a reasonable price, SO I opted for some black ones I found on Amazon and then spray painted them. They came out great! I decided to stagger the shelves when installing because…the toilet is not centered to the spacing between the wall panel and side wall…therefore, if I centered the shelves, they would be off center to the toilet. I love how the staggered shelves turned out. They definitely create more interest in the space!

Ok friends, finally it was time to STYLE THE SHELVES! As you know, I figured shelves would give me more storage, so what better way to hide all our crap than in my favourite organization/décor accessory, a basket! So, I started with the basket, I placed it on the lower shelf because it’s at arms reach and it was a great way to hide the outlet since we never use it. Of course, every space needs greenery, so I added a faux plant from Ikea. Ikea’s faux plants are my favourite because they actually pass as real! I love plants, but I’m a terrible plant mom and Nelson is the one who ends up keeping them alive. On the top shelf I knew I was going to add some sort of art, vase, and candle. I had all these things in different areas of my home where they weren’t needed lol, so I repurposed them! Told you I like switching things up. For the art, since the bathroom was a result of our covid pandemic, I figured it would be fitting to remind people to do the right thing and, wash your hands. I have a bunch of empty frames in a box, so I picked out something simple + white. To create balance when looking at both shelves, I used a vase next to the frame and added some pampas grass for height and warmth. Finally, no room is complete without a beautifully scented candle. To add some contrast, I went with a candle in an amber glass jar. I also have a drawer of candles in our home because I love them so much!

After completing client projects, I’m used to the feeling of “I designed this,” but after this project, I got to experience a new feeling. Now, not only did I have the feeling of “I designed this,” I also felt such accomplishment knowing “I helped build + create this.”

REMEMBER….

» Even though I went with a gold finish throughout my bathroom, don’t be afraid to mix metals!

» Sometimes we won’t find exactly what we are looking for, so we also need to look for the potential in the items we can find. There are often ways you can modify an item to create something more to your liking. Just like, how I spray painted my black wall bracket’s gold.

» Make sure to always include greenery when styling your space, even if it’s a faux plant!

» If there’s an aspect of your space you don’t particularly like but can’t modify, switch the focus to something else. I couldn’t change the location of my toilet to be centered, so I instead changed the focus to be the staggered shelves. Now, no one even pays attention to the toilet.
